AFAOA Needs Your Help!

Due to a severe shortage of volunteers to maintain AFAOA's 69 Austin family databases, a difficult, but necessary, decision has been made to deactivate 43 of those databases. (See the list below.) They will remain accessible to the public on the AFAOA website, but they will no longer be updated and there will be no one to answer queries on these family lines. They will remain inactive until volunteers step forward to adopt them and become their “editor”.

The functions of an “editor” include: serving as custodian of the database, answering queries, and making verified on-line additions and corrections. Some on-line research might be required – using census records, Find-a-Grave or Family History pages, etc. People skills and some basic familiarization with the TNG software program will be needed and can be easily learned. An AFAOA handbook for “editors” is available to be your guide. You will learn by doing. An effort level of about 3 hours per week is anticipated… a bit more should you volunteer for multiple databases.

If you are interested in genealogy, the preservation of Austin family history and the future of AFAOA, then please consider this request. It would be a good way to get involved with the workings of a great organization, and perform an essential and appreciated service.
