I have Austin relatives that aren't anywhere to be found!!

I am looking for my paternal great-great grandmother and her family. She was born Rebecca Travis, place unknown, 10/25/1830, died 1911. Her mother, Martha, was born in 1803, and was alive, living with Rebecca in Millville, NJ in 1880 for the Census. Rebecca married Charles Bounds, 1813-1858, and they had my great-grandmother, Rachel Bounds, in 1851. Rachel died in the flu pandemic of 1918, after a long marriage and raising 17 children (giving birth to 22). Rebecca married a man named Austin shortly after her husband's death. In the 1880 census, she was a widow again, with two children named Elmer and Charles. To which Austins do my relatives belong?
Thanks for your help. 7/2/10

Hattie Knuschke/Leonard N Austin Jr

My name is Donald Knuschke. Hattie E. Knuschke, who married Leonard N. Austin Jr. in 1879, was my grandfather’s sister. He was Ferdinand A. Knuschke. Their father (my great-grandfather was Ferdinand WL Knuschke and their mother was Mary Maria Chase.  Hattie Knuschke is buried in a Knuschke family plot at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island. Unfortunately I know almost nothing else about Hattie. I do know that Hattie and Leonard had two children, Louis and Robert. I am in the process of building a family tree/book that spans six generations of Knuschkes and I would be extremely grateful if you could send me a picture of Hattie and a copy of any documents that you may have. I was born in Providence, RI but through a series of business and personal moves we are now in South Carolina. Incidentally, I have a copy of my grandfather's marriage certificate that was signed by Leonard and his other son-in-law William Morrison.

Thanks in advance, Don 6/3/10

Subject:
David Austin and Abigail Huntley living in Potton Brome Quebec Canada in 1861

My inquiry is about

David Austin born about 1805 in Canada to Stephen Austin born about 1780  and Betsy (Elizabeth) Blanchard born about 1872 in New Hampshire.

In the 1861 Canadian census, this David (Dorea or Darius) Austin, age 56, and an Abigail Austin, age 38, are shown living in Potton Brome Quebec Canada on a farm.  Listed with them are children including a Leonard Austin, age 1 who would have been born in 1860, and a John Ellsworth Austin, age 22, who would have been born in 1838-39.  As you can see from the ages, Abigail is quite a bit younger than her husband David Austin and would have been only 15 when she conceived John Austin if she is his mother instead the step mother to John Austin.

In the same 1861 Canadian census, on nearby farms are Huntley families and a John Elkins Sargent family.  In this census, John Elkins Sargent is shown with his first wife Malvina Aikens, and other younger Sargent children, however, there is no infant named Leonard Sargent age 1 living with them.

According to family trees that I have located, David Austin's wife's maiden name was Huntley and she was born about 1823 in Canada.  These trees do not show another/earlier wife.  Just Abigail.

Here is my mystery.  These Austin trees assume that Abigail Huntley Austin died by 1871, as did Leonard Austin, since neither is shown with David Austin or the other younger children in the 1871 Canadian census.

There is a genealogy book called the Sargent Record (c) 1899,  for the Sargent family that states that this same John Elkins Sargent (shown in this 1861 Canadian census) had a second wife whose maiden name was Abigail Huntley.  Further it states that they had a son named Leonard born in 1860 in Potton Brome Canada.  This John Elkins Sargent and Abigail and Leonard do not appear in either the Canadian 1871 census nor the US 1870 census.  However, they do appear in Wisconsin in the 1880 census and who should be living on a nearby farm  but John Ellsworth Austin born in Canada about about 1838.

So, this leads me to believe that my great great grandfather who went by the name Leonard Sargent born in 1860 in Potton, Brome, Canada may have been an Austin!

Any suggestions or reactions would be greatly appreciated.

I reside in a small town in Arkansas and the book about Austin's in America is not available through the local library.  I understand from "Google Books" that the parents of David Austin are included in that document.

Thank you so much for your attention and possible response. 5/27/1

John Overton Austin children

My mother's grandmother was Mary "Mollie" Austin, born May 1861 in Fannin Co TX to John Overton Austin and his 2d [of3] wives, Minerva Jane Bassham. They had 2 daughters, Mollie and Lilly, born also Fannin Co TX in 1865. She appears as "William" in 1870 census, living with the Moores and her mother and older sister - I have checked the handwritten census page and "William" is marked "female" most clearly - then she appears in 1880 census as Lilly, age 15, "stepdaughter" of Minerva Jane Bassham Austin Titsworth and Levi N Titisworth, Minerva's second husband with whom she had 2 more daughters [Tina or "Tiny" and Julia] before her death in 1890. This death date is according to family stories, but with no other documentation that I have yet found. Since Levi Titsworth remarried in 1886, Minerva may have died as early as fall 1880, or as late as the spring of 1886, or she and Levi may have divorced. I have found nothing to indicate which of these possibilities is real. From a Fannin Co historical webpage I also have a photo of Lilly Austin circa 1890, at what appears to be a funeral at Moore's Chapel in Bonham, Fannin Co, TX, where Levi Titsworth and his first wife Julia are buried. Lilly is wearing a long dark full-skirted dress and is most definitely a female. Since the photo IDs her by her Austin name, I assume that she married after it was taken, if she married at all. I have found no record of her as a bride in any TX online marriage register, for any county.

After the 1880 census I can find no documentary evidence of Lilly Austin, other than the photo mentioned above. Her father John Overton Austin married his third wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Washington in March 1871, while he was serving in the TX Legislature. They appear in 1880 and 1900 census, the last as living with his oldest child and only daughter from his first marriage to Missouri Jones, Leonora Austin Stephenson and her husband and children, all in Fannin Co TX. Since there is effectively no 1890 census, I can only infer that John Overton and Lizzie Washington Austin lived in Bonham continuously following his service in the TX Leg til his death in 1908.

I would be most grateful if anybody can share any knowledge of Lilly Austin or Leonora Austin Stephenson [born in MO in 1848, appears in 1850 Fannin Co TX census with her mother and grandfather, and again as age 12 in 1860 Fannin Co TX census with her father and 3 younger brothers]. 5/24/10

Mary Jane Austin m. Harvey L. Way (maybe in Michigan) abt 1871

Hi, Does anyone out there have information on Mary Jane Austin  b. Nov 1848 married to Harvey L. Way in Michigan.  Her obituary says married in Alma, MI in 1871.  Alma said they have no record of their marriage.  I noticed on the 1900 census for Blackman township, Jackson Michigan, that they show her as being married 29 years and Harvey as married 27 years.  So this brings up the question of was she Mary Jane Austin or was Austin the name of a first husband.

I know in 1880 they were in Springwells Township Wayne county, MI (Detroit)
1888 till their death they were in the city of Jackson, Michigan and they owned the Way bakery

Mary Jane died in Jackson MI in 1924, Harvey in Eaton Rapids, MI in  1926
They are buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Jackson, MI

Any help or direction would be appreciated.  If Mary Jane was an Austin Im guessing you are the best people to ask.

Thank you,

I am doing family research regarding the Mascrafts/Converses.
My direct ancestor, Mary Mascraft  was the daughter of Jacob Mascraft and Hannah Austin.

I have information that Hannah Austin, of Taunton, was the daughter of William Austin. This William Austin was supposedly a ship owner and master, and had a son named William. They were apparently lost at sea, sometime during the Revolutionary War. Hannah Austin and Jacob Mascraft were married in about 1777.

I was wondering if you had any further information regarding this family, and what line it descends from.

I would be very grateful for any information you could give me, or at least point me in a direction to continue my research.

Thank you!

I have recently participated in the "Austin D.N.A. Project" it has been suspected that "our John" Austin, b. 1765, ...? of Monongalia Co. Va./Wv. was connected to some Austins in the "northern databases" possibly Md. or N.J. the D.N.A. provides a possible, minor genetic link to some, like Jonah Austin b.1598 of Taunton Mass. (and the Good Ship "Hercules") and Zebadiah Austin b. 1797 of Conn. (and his "Indian" connections) and Robert Austin b. 1635? found in Kingston, R.I. also to an article, the "Staplehurst Connection", in Kent, England area...? for a number of them, I was wondering if there had been any new info. on "our John" and how he may, at an earlier time, connect to these families, also if there is any info. on his wife Sarah ...? from Franklin, Pa.? or their marriage in Pa. or Md.? before their arrival in the "Vally of the Monongehela" in western Va./Wv. Subject: Baruch (or Barach) O'Dell Austin

I am trying to type memories written by my mother about her family. I found a family tree she had made which listed her great grandfather as Barach Odell Austin. I found his name in the on-line search of the Austin Family Association as Baruch Odell Austin. The database has no dates, but my info has him being born in 1807 and died 1884. His wife is listed as Pauline Shirtridge, but the family that my mother knew as relatives was the "Shortridge" family. In my mother's information Pauline is listed as being born in 1815 and died 1849.
Their daughter Helen Elizabeth Austin Bridges lived in central Missouri, In Syracuse, near Sedalia and Tipton. I don't have birth/death dates for her. She married James L. Bridges on October 8, 1860-something (corner of manuscript torn off).
Some earlier Austin relatives apparently had previously lived in the lead-mining areas of Missouri. This has suggested to us that there might be a connection to the Moses Austin family; we'd love to find out.
Does anyone else have any information? 8/31/09

Subject: Asa S. Austin

I am a maternal descendant of Asa S. Austin who married a woman by the name of Rhoda.

According to “Stephen Austin Descendants” posted on rootsweb.com by L.D., the researcher noted that the 1800 US Census showed the following: “Stephen Austin 21301 21001, Asa Austin 00100 00100.”

Asa is enumerated in the 1800 US Census of German Flats immediately before Stephen Austin with a household of one male 16-26 and one female 16-26. This census schedule raises the probability that Asa was the son of Stephen Austin. The Stephen Austin enumerated here was the Stephen Austin who married Sarah Patchin,  prob. in Columbia Co., NY.

In 1820, Asa Austin appeared in the census of Fayette, Seneca County, NY, with nine males and three females.  The 1830 census schedule of Wayne, Steuben County, NY, shows "Asa L. Austin" with a household of two males and four females. A deed dated 19 Dec 1842 includes Asa S. Austin and "Rhoda his wife," as grantors of property in Bradford, Steuben County, NY.

Asa Austin is seen in the 1855 New York State Census of Tyrone, Schuyler County, NY as “Asa S. Auston, age 78, b. Columbia Co.,” living in the household of his son Daniel D. Austin. This places his birth approximately at 1777.

Five years later, Asa was enumerated in his son Dayton Austin’s household for the 1860 US Census in Marengo Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, age 84. This would place his birth date at 1776.

The maiden name of Rhoda is wanting.  Her burial is recorded in Weston Cemetery, Town of Tyrone, Schuyler co., NY as “Rhoda  wf/Asa S  10-7-1846  ae 68.” This places her birth year at circa 1778.

Only known children of Asa S. Austin and Rhoda (?) are:

Dayton C. Austin born in 1819, likely in Seneca County, NY
Daniel D. Austin, born in 1826, in Seneca County, NY

If there are any descendants “out there” with any additional information that could be helpful, I would appreciate hearing back. 8/31/09

I did read somewhere, before I learned to keep extensive records, that a child came with them when they moved to GA. I think before they got married.  Does any of this sound familiar, or do you know if she was a child of Blevins before she met Hezekiah. All of my relatives are from Bledsoe, Grundy, Marion county TN, Dade Co. GA and Dekalb Co. AL.Martha married a David Highfield and had a son Jonathan A. Highfield, I found his grave in Dade Co. Thanks for any info. Also I would be interested in DNA thru my father, he is 79 yrs.  Do you know how many generations this will go back. 8/10/09

Thank you for providing public access to the Austin Family Association databases.

Who was the Austin who married Betty Daniell/Daniel before 1794, probably in Hancock County, Georgia or Fairfield/Richland County, South Carolina? They are the parents of Jesse Daniell Austin, whose surname is also listed as Auston and Osten in records. The information below may help to identify this "Unknown Austin."

Jesse Daniell Austin was born on 9 September 1794 in probably in Hancock County, Georgia or Fairfield/Richland County, South Carolina. Jesse is named in the Bible of his grandfather, James Daniell. Jesse's birth was also recorded in the Bible of his Uncle Levi Daniell. James Daniell, in his Will dated 11 May 1797, Hancock County, listed bequeaths to "my grandson Jesse Daniell Auston, son of Betty Auston." No other record of Jesse's mother or father has been found. Because there was no bequeath to either of Jesse's parents, they are presumed to have died before 11 May 1797. Estate records of payments for Jesse's care also indicate he was an orphan. He was raised by the widow and family of his Uncle Levi Daniell who died in Dec 1800 in Hancock County. At age 13, Jesse legally changed his surname to Daniell. The Georgia Black Book", Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. (1807 entry) records, "Jesse Daniell Austin changes name to Jesse Daniell. No father named 11-27-1807." Estate records reflect the name change as well.

Jesse's grandfather, James Daniell, migrated from Fairfax County, Virginia to South Carolina about 1754, the date of his grant of 200 acre land grant on Broad River or the waters of Santee. He is named in 1790 census of Fairfield County, South Carolina and had land in Richland and Edgefield counties as well. After acquiring land in 1787 in Greene County, Georgia, that portion later in Hancock, James moved circa 1790 to his land on Island Creek, Hancock County, where he died before 5 March 1798.

Jesse was a veteran of the War of 1812. On 17 January 1816, he married Mary Ann Tucker of Washington County, Georgia. Her parents, John Robert Tucker and Mary Ann Reese, had migrated to Washington County from Richland County, South Carolina. Jesse and Mary had 14 children. Both died in Baldwin County, Georgia, he in 1860 and she in 1880.

Any assistance in discovering the father of Jesse Daniell Austin, son of Betty Austin would be greatly appreciated. 5/12/09
