Thomas Austin of Albany County, NY
Compiler:

Thomas Austin is first recorded in land transactions where he bought his farm near the village of Watervliet, State of New York, just north of the Hudson River terminus of the Erie canal.  The town became known as "Tarrytown" because the canal workers "tarried" there until late at night in Thomas' tavern, located in a building known as the "Castle."  The community later became Bethlehem, and even later, New Scotland.  Thomas died in Bethlehem, December 1820.
