John Calhoun Austin of Alabama
Compiler:

This database has been provided to the AFAOA through the courtesy of Helen Cook Austin, Ph.D., who has graciously agreed to become its compiler.  It is the result of well over ten years of research, by Helen, into many Southern Austin lines (see below).  Helen also prepared a biography of John Calhoun entitled Some Descendants of John Calhoun Austin of Warrior Mountains of Lawrence County, Alabama from which the following paragraphs have been excerpted.  This article was submitted to Lawrence County Heritage Book Committee and published in October 1998.

"The ancestry of John C. Austin goes back to the British Isles.  From the Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century, the Austin Clan lived in the Midlands and border lands, between Scotland and England. Their lives were a constant struggle.  They were always fighting for the land and their rights.  They were caught between the Scottish and the English.  Proud, strong, and independent people, the Austins found the struggle to be too much to bear.  They yearned for a quieter place where they could be free from tyranny.

Many Austins left for Ireland, lived there for a generation or two, and then migrated to America. John's great-great grandparents found their way to the Upcountry of South Carolina where they lived for a couple of generations.  Before 1825, John's parents headed west over the Smoky Mountains".
