John Austin of Monongalia, VA
Compiler:
John
Austin was born about 1765 in what possibly could have been New Jersey. As
a young man, he moved to Franklin County, Pennsylvania where he met and married
his wife Sarah. The family moved, migrating from one iron forge to
another, to Washington County, Maryland then finally settling in Monongalia
County, Virginia about 1804. Together, John and Sarah had 15 known
children, most of whom arrived at adulthood, married and remained in Monongalia
County. John died in 1849 and Sarah about 1854. They are both buried in
Fairview Cemetery, just south of Morgantown, West Virginia. A surprising number
of John's descendants worked with metal, either as forge men, blacksmiths, or
nail makers. Some in later generations worked in steel mills and glass
factories.
Credit for the beginnings of this database must be given to Ann Hecathorn
whose extensive research provided the framework for the first four generations.
Since that time, Susan Joy Lewis has continued the research which now
extends for 8 generations, and she has agreed to continue maintaining the
database as compiler. Most of the West Virginia descendant lines are
current, but many out-of-state lines have not been brought up to the present
generation, so please send her any updates, corrections, and questions.
