This database is the collection of a number of databases that represent the research of Bess Austin Machtley, Douglas and Elizabeth Austin, and E. Ray Austin, among others. Bess Austin Machtley (1925-1980) founded the Austin Family Association of Lost Creek, White Co., TN, and was instrumental in researching many White County Austins. E. Ray Austin's research provided the backbone of this database, and he completed the combination of the various researchers' material, and computerized it. AFAOA Southern Genealogist Liz Austin Carlin also had a hand in placing this database on the AFAOA web site, and is serving as the database compiler. Please send her any updates, corrections, etc.
DNA testing of descendants of these White County, Tennessee Austins, and descendants of William and Milley (Dalton) Austin of Anderson County, Tennessee (William an alleged son of John Austin, Sr. of "Southside" Region of Virginia*), and a descendant of Bartholomew Austin of Virginia*, has shown that these families, presently considered as separate AFAOA databases, present “perfect” DNA matches (37 out of 37 markers match). Shorter DNA tests (25 markers) of descendants of John Austin, Sr. and John Austin, Jr. of the “Southside” region of Virginia show that there is a very close relationship to these “perfect” families, and there is much evidence that for generations these families have lived in close proximity to each other in Virginia and North Carolina, and in later migration into Tennessee.
Presently, research is being done to establish just how these families do connect to each other.
