The inscription on Thomas Austin's headstone in the Old Reformed Graveyard, Sharpsburg, Washington Co., Maryland reads: "Thomas Austin Who departed this life, March 2nd 1843, Aged 75 years, 9 months and 1 day." This would yield a birth date of 1 Jun 1767.
Thomas married first a woman (name unknown) and had four children. Only two of these children's names are known: Joseph B. and Nancy. Thomas married second Mary Shirley and had two more children, Thomas Gilmore and another child whose name is unknown.
The names of Thomas' family have been derived from the provisions of his will which initially left half of the estate remaining after sale of real and personal property to Joseph B. and the other half to Thomas Gilmore's children for their education. Obviously, Thomas Gilmore was not alive at the time of Thomas' death. This provision was revised in a codicil to the will which bequesthed Thomas Gilmore's half to his spouse Lavinia. It is unknown whether Lavinia was his third wife, or another name for Mary Shirley.
