Early in 1996, a small database was donated to the AFAOA by Michelle Austin Gardner of Oregon. Placed in our Southern Unplaced file, it traced a single line from Solomon Austin through the Elliott Austin family (Solomon, Philip, Aaron, Philip Waddle, Elliott).
Independently, researcher Walter Hartung’s great aunts Florence and Emma Austin started work on their Austin family history in the 1890s and continued their research until just before their deaths in the 1950s. After their deaths, these handwritten notes, family pictures, and family papers were gathered by their sister, Edna Austin Koehler, and a niece, Dorothy Hartung Adrian and served as the basis for Walter Hartung’s family research on John Austin (1767-1857), his ggg grandfather. Late in April of 2006, Walter contacted AFAOA genealogist Liz Austin Carlin, and since then has worked with her to establish the Solomon and John Austin of North Carolina database now on this site.
While doing his research, Walter became acquainted with David Austin Avery, a native of Ontario, Canada and whose ggg grandfather was Solomon Austin. David has spent countless hours researching Solomon Austin and his descendants making several trips to North Carolina and Maryland and other locations to substantiate his findings concerning his Austin family heritage. David's privately published book, Some Ancestors and Descendants of Solomon Austin 1600-2000, provided the majority of the Solomon Austin genealogy found in this database. The AFAOA is very grateful to David Avery for sharing his research with us on-line.
Walter Hartung has agreed to become the compiler for this database, so please send him all questions, updates, corrections, etc.
