According to The Austin Family of Southeast Alabama by John Greene Austin, 1996: "One of the early settlers of South East Alabama was John Austin of North Carolina." John Austin and his son, John Arter Austin came with John Walding about 1818.

In 1803, John Austin, Thomas Crittendon, Jeremiah Day, and their families, were granted a passport by the Cherokee Indian Nation to: "... descend the river and other waters...".
