This database was created by Charles E. Austin and Ruth (Marshall) Austin in early 1960. Since then, significant research into Bartholomew's Austin line has occurred. Material has been incorporated from Janet Austin Curtis' article Southside Virginia Austins which appeared in the October-December 1961 edition of The Virginia Genealogist, and from Eliju Jasper Sutherland's Some Sandy Basin Characters. Most recent research has been done by Janet Austin Bruckner of Fort Worth,Texas.
DNA testing of a descendant of Bartholomew Austin, and descendants of the White County, Tennessee Austins* and descendants of William and Milley (Dalton) Austin of Anderson County, Tennessee has shown that these families, presently considered as separate AFAOA databases, present “perfect” DNA matches (37 out of 37 markers match). Shorter DNA tests (25 markers) of descendants of John Austin, Sr. and John Austin, Jr. of the “Southside” region of Virginia* show that there is a very close relationship to these “perfect” families, and there is much evidence that for generations these families have lived in close proximity to each other in Virginia and North Carolina, and in later migration into Tennessee.
Presently, research is being done to establish just how these families do connect to each other.
